Keeping your workers safe at work is vital. Ensuring they wear slip resistant safety shoes to reduce the risk of them slipping at work is part of the solution. However, not all slip resistant shoes are created equal. So, how do you know if the shoes your workers are wearing are slip resistant enough?
Slip resistance is measured using a scale. This scale goes from 0.00 to 1.00.
0.00 corresponds to a skating rink, while 1.00 corresponds to a dry carpet. The higher the number, the greater the slip resistance.
So instead of asking whether a pair of shoes is slip resistant, we should be asking: how slip resistant is a pair of safety shoes for women.
Is there a standard for slip resistance
Unfortunately, there is no national standard for slip-resistant footwear in the workplace. Unlike the CSA safety standards for toe and footplate protection, there are multiple performance levels for slip resistance and different brands use different testing methods to determine slip resistance. In other words, not all safety footwear provides the same level of slip resistance, nor is it measured in the same way.
Use a ruler to determine your shoe size
If you are ordering safety shoes online, you may want to increase your confidence that you will receive a pair of shoes that fit properly. Measuring your feet to get your shoe size is a great way to build that confidence. If all shoe manufacturers used the same shoe size, there would be no need to do this, but there are subtle differences from manufacturer to manufacturer.
Place a ruler on a straight wall or other surface that is perpendicular to the ground.
Place your heel on the wall so that it is in contact with the floor and the wall. If you feel comfortable, you can stand on your ruler.
Stand up straight and push your heel back against the wall as if you were pushing back the back of your shoe.
